National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), India

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), located in Bengaluru, Karnataka, is India’s premier institution for mental health and neurosciences, delivering cutting-edge patient care, education, and research.

Its roots trace back to the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum (1847) and the Government Mental Hospital (1925). In 1954, it merged with the All India Institute of Mental Health to form the modern-day NIMHANS, officially established on 27 December 1974.

It was accorded “Deemed University” status in 1994 by the UGC, granting academic autonomy. In 2012, Parliament recognized its national significance by designating it as an Institute of National Importance through the NIMHANS Act.
